Description

This homemade pizza sauce is a rich, flavorful blend of crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and aromatic herbs, simmered gently to create the perfect base for any pizza. Easy to prepare and full of classic Italian flavors, this sauce elevates your pizza to pizzeria quality without any additives or preservatives.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
  • 1/2 Tbsp sugar
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • 1 pinch crushed red pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté Garlic: Add the olive oil and minced garlic to a sauce pot and cook over medium heat for 1–2 minutes or until the garlic is softened and fragrant, making sure not to brown it to maintain a delicate flavor.
  2. Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, dried basil, dried oregano, freshly cracked black pepper, and optional crushed red pepper. Mix thoroughly to combine all the ingredients evenly.
  3. Simmer Sauce: Cover the pot and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for at least 15 minutes or up to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld beautifully.

Notes

  • Simmering longer (up to 30 minutes) enhances the flavor and thickness.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, particularly salt and pepper.
  • Use fresh herbs if available for a brighter flavor, adjusting quantities accordingly.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
  • This sauce can be used for pasta as well as pizza.
