Description

This Slow Cooker Spiced Apple Sauce is a cozy, sweet, and simple homemade treat made with just a handful of ingredients. With warm spices and tender apples, it’s perfect for snacking, baking, or serving as a holiday side.

Ingredients

  • 5 lbs apples (Jona-Gold preferred, but any variety works)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (or substitute with ground cinnamon)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples, then place them in a slow cooker.
  2. Add the water, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice (or cinnamon), and a pinch of salt. No need to stir.
  3. Cook on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. Once the apples are soft, stir to keep the sauce chunky, or mash with a potato masher or immersion blender for a smooth consistency.
  5. Let cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Notes

  • This apple sauce can be frozen for up to 5 months in an airtight container.
  • For long-term storage, use the water-bath canning method and store in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.
  • Adjust sweetness to taste by using more or less brown sugar.
  • Try mixing apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
