Description

This homemade Honey Garlic Sauce is a sweet and savory blend perfect for drizzling over stir-fries, grilled meats, or as a dipping sauce. Made quickly on the stovetop with soy sauce, honey, garlic, and a hint of vinegar, it offers a rich flavor balanced by the mild acidity of rice vinegar and the thick consistency from cornstarch.

Ingredients

Honey Garlic Sauce Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Soy Sauce
  • ¼ cup Honey
  • ⅓ cup Brown Sugar
  • 7-8 cloves Garlic, minced and separated (~1 ½ Tablespoons)
  • 2 Tablespoons Rice Vinegar
  • ¼ cup Water
  • 1 Tablespoon Cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Combine Sauce Ingredients: In a small saucepan, add the soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, 5 cloves of minced garlic (approximately 1 tablespoon), and rice vinegar. Whisk together until all ingredients are well combined to form the base of the sauce.
  2. Dissolve Cornstarch: In a small bowl, mix the water with the cornstarch, stirring continuously until the cornstarch completely dissolves. Pour this mixture into the saucepan with the other sauce ingredients.
  3. Heat and Bring to Boil: Place the saucepan over medium heat. Whisk regularly to prevent lumps and allow the sauce to come to a boil.
  4. Simmer the Sauce: Once boiling, reduce the heat slightly and let the sauce boil gently for 5 minutes. This thickens the sauce and allows flavors to meld.
  5. Add Remaining Garlic: Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the remaining minced garlic cloves (about ½ tablespoon) for a fresh garlic punch without overpowering bitterness.
  6. Cool and Serve: Transfer the sauce to a container or serving bowl and allow it to cool slightly or completely before serving. The sauce will thicken as it cools and can be stored for later use.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red chili flakes or a dash of sriracha while boiling.
  • Use fresh garlic for the best flavor; avoid pre-minced garlic if possible.
  • The sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.
  • If the sauce thickens too much upon cooling, thin it with a little warm water before serving.
  • This sauce pairs well with chicken, pork, tofu, and vegetables.
