Description

This Homemade Lumpia recipe offers a delicious taste of Filipino cuisine with crispy, golden spring rolls filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, vegetables, and aromatic seasonings. Perfect as an appetizer or snack, these lumpia can be enjoyed fresh and hot, ideally paired with a sweet chili dipping sauce for an extra burst of flavor.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef (not cooked)
  • ½ cup carrot, shredded or diced
  • ½ cup celery, shredded or diced
  • ½ medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon seasoning salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

Other

  • 1 package spring roll wrappers
  • 1 small bowl water (to help seal lumpia)
  • 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Spring Roll Wrappers: Cut the spring roll wrappers in half diagonally using a pizza cutter or sharp knife. Separate each sheet and cover with a damp paper towel to prevent drying out, making them easier to handle when rolling.
  2. Make Filling: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with shredded carrot, celery, diced onion, minced garlic, black pepper, seasoning salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the vegetables and seasonings.
  3. Roll Lumpia: Take one spring roll wrapper and place about a tablespoon of the meat mixture along the edge of the long side. Roll tightly toward the pointed edge. When halfway rolled, fold the sides inward toward the center. Continue rolling until only about an inch remains at the top.
  4. Seal Lumpia: Wet your fingers with water and use it to moisten the remaining inch of the wrapper. Press to seal the roll and set it aside. Repeat this step with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  5. Fry Lumpia: Heat vegetable oil over medium heat in a frying pan. Once hot, carefully place lumpia in the oil and fry for about 10 minutes, turning frequently to achieve an even golden brown, crispy exterior.
  6. Serve: Drain the fried lumpia on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve immediately with sweet chili dipping sauce for that irresistible flavor combination.

Notes

  • Cutting wrappers diagonally makes smaller, more manageable lumpia.
  • Keep wrappers covered with a damp towel to prevent them from drying out while working.
  • Roll the lumpia tightly to prevent bursting during frying.
  • Use a neutral oil with a high smoke point like vegetable oil for frying.
  • Serve lumpia hot for best texture and taste.
  • Sweet chili dipping sauce complements the savory flavors perfectly.
