Description

This Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteak recipe is a flavorful twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich, made with lean ground beef, sautéed onions, green peppers, and garlic, seasoned perfectly and layered with provolone cheese on a French bread loaf. Wrapped in foil and baked until the cheese melts and the flavors meld, it’s a hearty and satisfying meal that serves six.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 24 ounces lean ground beef
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, grated
  • 1 green pepper, sliced

Seasonings and Sauces

  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup low sodium beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

Bread and Cheese

  • 1 large French bread loaf or choice of bread
  • 8-12 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef: In a pan over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink. Drain off the fat to keep the sandwich lean and flavorful.
  2. Sauté vegetables and seasonings: Add sliced onion, grated garlic, green pepper, steak seasoning, salt, and pepper to the pan with the beef. Cook together until the vegetables soften and release their aroma.
  3. Add broth and thicken: Mix the cornstarch with the beef broth in a measuring cup to dissolve thoroughly. Pour this mixture into the pan with the beef and veggies, and simmer for 1-2 minutes until the sauce slightly thickens, binding all the flavors.
  4. Prepare the bread base: Slather the bottom half of the French bread loaf with mayonnaise and layer it with four slices of provolone cheese. This will help the bread hold moisture and add extra creaminess.
  5. Layer the filling: Spoon the meat and vegetable mixture evenly over the cheese layer on the bread. Then add four more slices of provolone cheese on top of the meat mixture for a cheesy finish.
  6. Assemble the sandwich: Spread mayonnaise on the top half of the bread loaf, then place it over the layered bottom half to create a full sandwich.
  7. Bake the sandwich: Wrap the sandwich tightly in aluminum foil to lock in moisture. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30-35 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt and the flavors to meld beautifully.
  8. Serve: Remove the foil carefully, slice the sandwich into portions, and serve immediately while warm and gooey.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the meat mixture.
  • Using low sodium beef broth helps control the saltiness, but adjust seasoning according to your taste.
  • Wrap the sandwich tightly in foil to prevent it from drying out during baking.
  • French bread is recommended for the crispy crust and soft interior, but any crusty bread can be substituted.
  • Leftovers can be reheated wrapped in foil at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.
