Description

These classic, fluffy homemade dinner rolls are soft, buttery, and perfect for serving alongside any meal. Made with simple ingredients and an easy-to-follow method using a stand mixer and oven baking, these dinner rolls will be a hit with your whole family.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tablespoons instant yeast, rapid rise
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1¼ cups warm milk, 110°F
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour (additional, divided)

Topping

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing the finished rolls)

Instructions

  1. Combine dry ingredients: In the bowl of a stand mixer, add 3 cups of flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. Stir them together to mix evenly.
  2. Add wet ingredients: Pour in the warm milk, softened butter, and egg to the dry ingredients.
  3. Mix dough: Attach the dough hook to the mixer and turn it on to the lowest speed. Mix until the flour is mostly incorporated, scraping down the bowl sides as needed to combine fully.
  4. Knead dough: Increase mixer speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes to develop the dough.
  5. Incorporate remaining flour: Add ½ cup of the additional flour and mix until incorporated. Add another ½ cup flour and mix for another 1-2 minutes on medium speed until a dough ball forms. Continue adding flour, up to ½ cup more if necessary, until the dough is slightly sticky but pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  6. First rise: Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl. Cover with a towel and let it rise at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  7. Deflate dough: Remove the towel and gently punch down the dough to deflate it.
  8. Form rolls: Pinch off pieces of dough to form 20 equal-sized dough balls.
  9. Second rise: Place the formed rolls into a lightly greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover with a towel and let rise again at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  11. Bake rolls: Bake the rolls for 15-17 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. If they brown too quickly, tent the rolls loosely with foil to prevent over-browning.
  12. Brush with butter and serve: Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with the melted butter. Serve warm or allow to cool and store in a plastic bag for up to 3 days.

Notes

  • For best results, ensure your milk is warm but not hot to activate the yeast properly.
  • You can substitute butter with margarine if dairy-free is needed.
  • Allowing the dough to rise fully will help the rolls be fluffy and soft.
  • Store any leftover rolls in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
  • These rolls can be frozen after baking; thaw and warm before serving.
