Ingredients
- 1/2 cup homemade caramel sauce (or store-bought), plus more for garnish
- 12 oz yellow or vanilla cake mix (gluten-free if desired)
- 3/4 cup butter, melted
- Apple Pie Filling:
- 4 green apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 5 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch + 2 tablespoons water (mixed)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- If using homemade caramel sauce, prepare it first and set aside to cool.
- Make the apple pie filling: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add cinnamon. Stir in chopped apples, sugar, and water. Cover and cook for 5–6 minutes, stirring every minute.
- Whisk together cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water in a small bowl. Add to apples and stir until thickened and bubbling. Remove from heat.
- Transfer the apple pie filling to a 9×13-inch baking dish and spread evenly.
- Drizzle 1/2 cup of caramel sauce over the apple mixture.
- Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the top. Do not mix.
- Pour melted butter over the cake mix, covering as much of it as possible.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling around the edges.
- Cool slightly and serve warm. Garnish with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, and extra caramel sauce if desired.
Notes
- Use store-bought caramel sauce to save time.
- Substitute with a gluten-free cake mix if needed.
- Let cool slightly before serving to allow the filling to set.
