Description

Cube Steak is a budget-friendly, tender cut of beef that’s dredged in seasoned flour, pan-fried, and simmered in a savory gravy. Perfect for a comforting meal served with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Ingredients

4 cube steaks (about 1 lb total)

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 small onion, thinly sliced (optional)

1 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)

1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional)

1 tablespoon water (for slurry, optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish.
  2. Pat cube steaks dry and dredge in the seasoned flour mixture. Shake off excess.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook steaks for 3-4 minutes per side until golden. Remove and set aside.
  4. Add onion to the skillet (if using) and sauté for 2-3 minutes. Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Stir and bring to a simmer.
  5. If thickening, mix cornstarch and water into a slurry and add to the gravy. Stir until thickened.
  6. Return steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Notes

Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.

Use cayenne or chili flakes for a spicy version.

Can be made in a slow cooker after searing for very tender results.

Double dredge with egg for a crispier crust.

Reheat gently and thin gravy with broth if needed.
