Description

A quick and easy single-serving chocolate mug cake that you can prepare in just minutes. This moist and chocolatey treat is perfect for when you need a fast dessert fix without the fuss of baking an entire cake.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour (23 g)
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar (25 g)
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (7.5 g)
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder (1 g)
  • Dash of salt (0.5 g)

Wet Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons milk (any kind) (45 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil (or melted butter) (15 ml)
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla bean paste (0.6 ml)

Add-ins

  • 1 tsp chocolate chips (or your favorite baking chips) (5 g)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mug: Lightly spray the bottom of a microwave-safe mug or coffee cup with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: Add the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt into the mug. Stir together thoroughly to combine all the dry components evenly.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in the milk, canola oil, and vanilla bean paste. Stir the mixture until smooth, making sure to scrape the bottom of the mug to incorporate all the flour. Then, either stir in the chocolate chips or sprinkle them on top.
  4. Microwave Cooking: Cook the mug cake in the microwave on high for 70 to 90 seconds until the cake is just set but still slightly shiny on top. Cooking time may vary depending on your microwave’s power.
  5. Rest Before Serving: Let the cake rest in the microwave for 1 minute after cooking. This allows the cake to finish setting and cool slightly before enjoyment.

Notes

  • Cooking time will vary based on the wattage of your microwave — start checking at 70 seconds to avoid overcooking.
  • If you prefer a more gooey center, cook closer to 70 seconds; for a firmer texture, cook up to 90 seconds.
  • You can substitute any type of milk you prefer, including dairy-free alternatives.
  • Feel free to swap canola oil with melted butter for a richer flavor.
  • Chocolate chips can be replaced with other flavored baking chips or nuts for variety.
