Description

This Apple Ginger Fruit Leathers recipe offers a delicious and healthy homemade snack made by simmering apples with fresh ginger, blending into a smooth puree, and then drying into chewy fruit strips. Naturally sweetened with maple syrup and lightly tangy from lemon juice, these fruit leathers are a perfect wholesome treat for kids and adults alike, providing concentrated apple flavor with a zing of ginger.

Ingredients

Fruit Puree

  • 4 cups chopped apples
  • Juice of ½ lemon (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (more or less to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and chop the apples into 1-inch pieces. Place them in a pot along with the lemon juice, minced ginger, and water.
  2. Simmer the Apples: Cook the mixture over medium heat for 10 minutes until the apples are soft and tender, allowing the flavors to meld.
  3. Blend the Mixture: Transfer the softened apples carefully into a blender or food processor. Add the maple syrup and blend until the mixture is completely smooth and uniform.
  4. Spread the Puree: Line a baking sheet or dehydrator tray with parchment paper and spread the apple puree evenly. Make the edges slightly thicker than the center to ensure even drying.
  5. Dry the Puree: To dry in an oven, set it to the lowest temperature possible and place the baking sheet inside. Prop the oven door open with a wooden spoon to allow moisture to escape. Alternatively, use a dehydrator set at 135°F. Dry for several hours until the fruit leather is no longer sticky and can be peeled off easily.
  6. Cut and Store: Once dried, transfer the fruit leather to parchment paper and roll it up. Cut into snack-sized pieces with scissors and store in an airtight container or zip-top bag for up to a few weeks.

Notes

  • Spreading the puree with thicker edges helps ensure even drying.
  • Drying time varies based on oven or dehydrator and humidity; check regularly.
  • Keep the oven door propped open carefully to prevent accidents.
  • Store fruit leathers in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness.
  • Adjust maple syrup according to desired sweetness.
